Does Castor Oil Have Side Effect? Here’s What You Need to Know

| Last Updated on

Castor oil is a beauty secret which has been around for centuries. No wonder, a lot of beauty products use this oil as one of the ingredients. But, you may be wondering about one thing – does castor oil have side effect?

Yes, there are side effects too. If it’s you’re first time using this oil or if you have been using castor oil recently, here’s a quick run through on the possible side effects.

Skin Irritation

Castor oil is a mild irritant. Some people may experience hives and itching in the area where they applied the oil. To avoid this side effect, always rinse the area where you applied castor oil with water and mild soap.

Usual complaints after using castor oil include mildly red skin and inflammation. In severe cases, application of the oil may cause a rash.

If you are planning to use castor oil on your face for the first time, test it out on your wrist first. If it doesn’t trigger an allergic reaction, proceed to using it on your face.

Eye Discomfort

The ancient Egyptians used castor oil to treat dry eyes. This oil lubricates the eyes, so it stays moist. But this remedy does not apply to everyone. You may experience mild discomfort when using castor oil eye drops.

Gastrointestinal Problems

Castor oil is an effective purgative. If you have constipation, it can ease your suffering in as little as six hours. But there’s a catch.

Castor oil is effective as a laxative because of ricinoleic acid. When you take this oil, the small intestine breaks it down to this acid which can irritate the stomach lining. When this happens, your stomach walls contracts which is why a lot of people report stomach cramps when they take castor oil orally.

If you overdose on castor oil, you may experience cramps and muscle weakness.

Dizziness and Nausea

Taking more than the recommended amount of castor oil can cause nausea and dizziness. There are also reported cases of electrolyte imbalance and dehydration. Aside from nausea, intake of castor oil may also result in vomiting.

Bowel Problems

While lauded as a laxative, taking castor oil for extended periods is not recommended. You may experience diarrhea as a side effect.

When used for a long time, castor oil tends to reduce muscle tone in your intestines. As a consequence, you may suffer from chronic constipation.

Aside from that, taking castor oil could also reduce the absorption of nutrients in your intestines. Castor oil also reduces the potassium in the body. So, using it for a long time can cause a nutrient deficiency.

Does castor oil have side effect for pregnant women?

Pregnant women should be cautious in taking castor oil. Always consult your doctor before taking castor oil for constipation. This oil may trigger premature labor since it causes the uterus to contract.

Parents should avoid administering castor oil to children younger than six years old. Consult your doctor first.

Observe precautions for children under 12 and adults over 60 years old. Individuals taking medication the following should avoid taking castor oil:

  • Antibiotics
  • Bone medicines
  • Heart medicines
  • Blood thinners
  • Diuretics

Always ask your doctor when taking castor oil to ease constipation. Recommended dose is 15 to 60 ml for adults. For inducing labor, the highest dose is 120 ml. Keep in mind that these are general guidelines. Don’t take castor oil without consulting your doctor.

Should I Still Try Castor Oil?

Does castor oil have a side effect that you’re worried about?

If you’re not sure if castor oil is best for you, consult your doctor. It’s always better to seek professional help especially if you have a health problem.

Another tip is to check the ingredients in the castor oil you are using. Low-quality oil is more likely to cause side effects. The problem may not lie on castor oil itself but in additives and the manufacturing process.
